8 tips for effective networking

Networking with your peers and colleges is a great way to grow in your industry. Not only can you learn valuable tips, but you can also connect with new contacts or connections. Networking may seem tricky at first, but adding these tips into your arsenal will greatly benefit you and your career. 1: Use social media to your advantage: Social media is not simply for friendships; instead, you can use social media to get to know other contacts. Why this works is because it eliminates the pressure and tension of a face-to-face meet up. It’s also a way in which you can respond to communications on your time and not pressured to make an immediate decision about something. Many professionals use LinkedIn to network with peers and other professionals, some also use the likes of Twitter or Google Plus. To create engagement, you can like or comment on a post uploaded by them. These communications will come in handy when you actually get to meet in person, you can refer to this and not be c...

Five Reasons Why the T-shirt is a Universal Garment

1) The T-Shirt Defies Custom and Season Whether summer or winter, day or night, leisure or work, the T-shirt defies tradition and season. In the summer, it is pleasantly airy, protecting your shoulders from the sun at the same time. In the winter, it comes as very useful hidden under thick sweaters. The t-shirt is not only used during the day, but also at night. After the classic pyjamas, it ranks second in the most popular sleep outfits. The cool and fashionable charm of the T-shirt is suitable, if well combined, for almost every occasion. The French luxury label Hermès suggests that the T-shirt is also appropriate for the world’s catwalks. For instance, there is $91,500 expensive luxury t-shirts made of crocodile leather, while this amount of money could probably get 300 school classes dressed for 365 days. This costly piece definitely defies the customs! 2) The T-shirt is an Expression of Personality In 2014, Glamor magazine recognized the T-shirt slogan as the best way to expr...

How to Accessorise for a Night Out

Whether you are getting ready for a big formal party or just want to go out and look the best you can, accessories are your accomplices in the perfect styling. Jewellery can enhance your elegance, give you a slightly eccentric and authentic vibe, or, on the contrary, ruin a perfect outfit if you pick out some odd pieces. Shoes, watches and handbags can go beyond their functional role and become the trademarks of your style. Accessories might be only details but they certainly reveal the essence of your style by complementing and accentuating it. They can transform casual-looking dresses into head-turning points of attraction. Yet, having nice details works only when you are familiar with the rules of accessorising. Relying on your own sense of fashion and creativity is, when it comes to accessories, always a good idea. However, a few tricks can help you boost your creativity even more and help you glow in your nights out. 1. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend Genuine or lab-creat...

A letter to my teenage self

I have been a victim of bullying. When I was in grade 5 we moved from Lenasia which was a predominantly Indian area to Robertsham. I will never forget my first day in my new school. Some of the other Muslim kids asked ‘how can you be Muslim, you’re so dark?’ They came to the conclusion that I was a ‘black Muslim’. I didn’t even understand what they meant. When I went high- school it was even worse. I was picked on because I was ‘dark’ I had curly hair and my dad was a revert and it was a Muslim school.  I struggled in grade 8 and I blamed my parents for putting me in that school. I started rebelling against my parents, I did everything they told me not to do. I consumed alcohol, had bad friends, ran away from home and even attempted suicide. I remember questioning myself some nights about the colour of my skin. Don’t worry about those that pick on you because they are not permanent in your life. Don’t let people dictate what ‘being beautiful’ is because beauty is in the eye...

OHHH NOOOO IT’S BABY WEIGHT

Well I’ve been tiny all my life and didn’t ever struggle with weight. I weighed about 50kg before my pregnancy. By the end of my pregnancy, I weighed a whooping 80 kgs.  Shocking!!! I know. Well after 5 months, I’m down to 55kgs. I was nervous about gaining so much weight but somehow it all seems to be going. I couldn’t use a belly binder like most mums due to all the extra cuts that I had on the inside. I still have some pain so exercise is also out of the question for now. I can’t diet as I’m breastfeeding. Lol don’t even talk about the breastfeeding. I’m super hungry all the time and I’m a sucker for junk food so I eat loads of it. However here are some of my tips for weight-loss: 1. Drink loads of water…I drink at least two litres a day. Add lemon oranges or strawberries to make it taste better. 2. Be as active as possible…for me this means washing breast-pumps, bottles and dummies all day long, burping and feeding the baby 🙂 lol she loves to be carried and I walk up a...

My Journey To Taking A Sabbatical

Life can sometimes be unpredictable, and the things you thought you once wanted to do, soon become obsolete!!! Ever had that feeling? Well, at the age of 31, I kinda found myself a little frazzled with life. My husband and I were working hard after having 2 beautiful kids 19 months apart. This is what life looked like… We found ourselves leaving home around 6am and returning  home 7pm or later daily, having takeout dinners more than 50% of the week.  I was chasing my career to the next level, studying part time, serving at my local church, being wife and mum, running the home, not forgetting birthdays (this is a big one, thank God for Facebook reminders), making home cooked meals, dealing with usual stresses of life, which left me spending so little time with my children, who not to mention were still babies, and not being present even when I was present… I tried so hard to keep it together, and be graceful through it all!!! Truth be told I was not coping, and something n...

Getting Intentional, Getting Cozy with it!

Ever found a word or concept that was so on point and resonated so much with you that you couldn’t help but open a company and name it that! OK Seriously, I did that …. Anyway, while you get yourself together from either laughing or criticising me. Let me share a bit about this concept I came across a few years ago! And yes, it’s true, I loved it so much that I was so keen on naming my business that, which is exactly what I did. I’m pretty sure it’s not all that foreign to everyone and you may have heard of it or come across it! Hygge, pronounced as HUE GAH, is a Danish/Norwegian word, that forms a major part of their lifestyle and culture. There are multiple variations of its meaning which I’ve taken the liberty of listing below; a mood of cosiness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment the Danish art of cosiness  creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people the art of creating intimacy: a sense of comr...

Frugality - Parenting On A Budget

Can you ever have enough money for babies ....ha! I wonder????? Having kids on a budget is no joke but at the same time does it really have to break the bank! It would appear that in many households the financial impact of having kids is many a time “the straw that breaks the camel’s back” In my experience, we did not make the decision to have any of our kids based on our financial situation, instead we chose to believe that we were meant to have kids AND our faith allowed us to believe that regardless of our financial situation, if God gave us children and we planned well, He would also provide for us to take care of them. Doesn’t sound very practical but that’s honestly what it boiled down to, a whole lot of faith. Coupled with our faith and because we know that having faith without actually doing something is useless. We needed to put in some action by being prudent and exercising some frugality. But how, without being stingy, yet still making sure that all their basic needs ...

Bonding Again

Many of us, that find ourselves working, and looking after a young family, have probably been away from them for more than 50% of their little lives. I would have never thought that I needed to bond with my children again…. Bonding may mean different things to everyone, so I had to look it up! The word bond, means to establish a relationship based on shared feelings, interests or experiences, or having a sense of attachment, closeness and love. Some of these exist naturally up to a point but to keep the closeness they all need to be maintained …it doesn’t just happen. My kids were 4 and 6 years old at the time I did the toss-up between being home and working. Sometimes, we have no idea of the impact that “the daily grind” has on our home-life and how far removed we are from genuinely bonding with our kids, if,  we succumb to an unhealthy daily routine. All those years ago, we would leave home early to beat traffic and return no earlier than when it was dark on most days. To ...
