Five Reasons Why the T-shirt is a Universal Garment

1) The T-Shirt Defies Custom and Season
Whether summer or winter, day or night, leisure or work, the T-shirt defies tradition and season. In the summer, it is pleasantly airy, protecting your shoulders from the sun at the same time. In the winter, it comes as very useful hidden under thick sweaters. The t-shirt is not only used during the day, but also at night. After the classic pyjamas, it ranks second in the most popular sleep outfits. The cool and fashionable charm of the T-shirt is suitable, if well combined, for almost every occasion. The French luxury label Hermès suggests that the T-shirt is also appropriate for the world’s catwalks. For instance, there is $91,500 expensive luxury t-shirts made of crocodile leather, while this amount of money could probably get 300 school classes dressed for 365 days. This costly piece definitely defies the customs!

2) The T-shirt is an Expression of Personality
In 2014, Glamor magazine recognized the T-shirt slogan as the best way to express fashion statement. Sounds just about right, as anything written on T-shirts imposes as a focal point for our outfits. Even when wearing a T-shirt or loose blouse, the T-shirt always stands out and conveys a highly personalized level of uniqueness. Stars like to print messages on their shirts, and we at style to perfection affectionately remember Drew Barrymore was pictured with her daughters to wear a T-shirt with the words “Mother of Dragons.” This shows her maternal pride while playing high in the famous “Game of Thrones” at the same time.
A T-shirt is not only fashionable but can also be used politically. The American Thomas Dewey used this in 1948 when he had his presidential campaign slogans printed on a T-shirt. Today, everyone can use a T-shirt to make public their opinions publicly.
In the wake of the terrorist attack on the editorial board of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, many people with the slogan “Je Suis Charlie” (English: “I am Charlie”) expressed their solidarity and sympathy on a T-shirt.
So, whether it is used for expression of personal style or important social or political statements, T-shirt comes as a highly effective tool.

3) From Underwear to Serial Star
The search for the origins of the T-shirt dated back to ancient Egypt did not become established until the 19th century, but at this time it was still an underwear and thus not at acceptable to the public. The sailors would take off their trademark blue T-shirt and willing wear the knit shirts on board the Ship at a time when the word T-shirt has not even existed. The image of the independent, adventurous sailors remained after the change to the civilian clothing item in the 1950s and T-shirt was no longer worn out just for one purpose, but was developed into a fashionable piece. The white T-shirt became a cult object as Hollywood stars such as Marlon Brando and James Dean became the epitome of coolness. Don Johnson proceeds to make T-shirt perfectly socially acceptable when he was dressed in fitted T-shirts with his suits when appearing as Sonny Crockett in the 1980s cult series Miami Vice. The women magazine ELLE adorned the T-shirt as “essential that never goes out of fashion because it is always a part of it’’.

4) The T-Shirt is Your Best Friend.
Community feeling comes from shared interests: You are a fan of the same sports team; you have the same favourite movie or share an individual hobby. Many brand logos should also show: “I belong to it!” The need to be a part of a particular group or community is not particularly loud during big sports events. So the T-shirt made it among the merchandising products to the football World Cup 2010 in front of the notorious Vuvuzelas.
The T-shirt not only allows us to be part of something in a particular life phase, but also proves to be a loyal companion all our lives. The author Charlotte Brunel opined that ‘’the story of life can be explained with a T-shirt”. When she was young, she wore a lightweight jacket, then a graduation T-shirt at the end of her studies; she later bought the “I Heart of New York” T-shirt when she completed her career abroad. Then there was T-shirt of the friends at the bachelor party. The latest T-shirt given to her was on mother’s day. The wardrobe is a chronicle of different life situations that awakens years later a very special feeling and memories. Finding your favourite T-shirt you wore 10, 20 years ago, can prove T-shirts are beyond fashion and carry certain emotional weight.

5) The T-shirt is International
The name is apparently derived from its shape. In the 1920s, the t-shirt was introduced into the Webster’s Dictionary and from then on became an internationally recognized Anglicism. The t-shirt does not have any language barriers, even in Chinese (T 恤, T xù) and Japanese (ィ シ ャ ツ ツ, tishatsu), the T-shirt is a T-shirt for non-linguists. Also, the fact that there are still regional varieties of expressions and our favourite is what people in Berlin call it: Nicki. How nice is it, who would not want other noble Nicki?
